finger tattoo designsTattooing, or the art of adding permanent ink to the skin, is an ancient practice. While the art form comes in and out of fashion, it has never died out since its introduction to the modern world by Captain Cook in the mid-1700s. The display of tattoos on the fingers is typically used for symbolic, hidden and unhidden purposes.
Wedding Rings
In modern times, certain subcultures substitute a tattoo on their ring finger for a traditional wedding ring. Model and actress Pamela Anderson chose this option when she married drummer Tommy Lee. The permanence of the tattoo represents dedication to the marriage partner. The ring is often a simple black band inked around the finger. Partners may choose a matching pattern of lines, such as a Celtic or Nordic design of intermingling lines going around the appropriate area. Christian, Celtic and iron crosses are popular choices for decoration, along with flowers or star shapes placed on the top side. Couples may choose to incorporate each others’ initials into the dedication tattoo, or create the band from their joined names. When choosing this type of design, keep in mind that the intricate work is very small and runs the risk of fading or smudging after years of wear. Unlike a traditional wedding ring, it is not easily removed in case of divorce.
Critters
Due to the lack of area to work with, small items, including bugs and spiders, are popular ideas for finger tattoos. On the whimsical front, add a red and black or yellow and black lady bug, with the legs wrapping around the chosen finger. Place a small green lizard on a finger facing the hand with its tail wrapped towards the finger nail. A teddy bear or koala can hug your thumb. For a more masculine appearance, place a large spider on the hands and use the fingers as the leg area, or ink a smaller spider on one finger with legs around the base. Ants, flies, bumble bees, mosquitoes and even roaches suit the tattooed taste.
Words and Numbers
In the 1980s, heavy metal music artist Ozzy Osbourne tattooed his nickname “Ozzy” across his fingers and began an undying trend in inking. Names, nicknames and self-titling pseudonyms are added to the fingers as forms of identification. Other popular other names belong to spouses, parents and children. In the same vein of thought, words of description, including “chaos,” “hate” and “love” are popular ideas. Significant dates, including birthdays and anniversaries, are common finger tattoos. Bass guitarist Nikki Sixx proudly presents his own birthday across the upper fingers of his left hand and the number 2012, a symbol of the end of time, across his right.
